Small Goddesses

The Goddess sculptures I make are of my own imagining, or re-interpretations of ancient artefacts. Where I have used an image from the past, I have endeavoured to stay true to its' original spirit, whilst also perhaps fitting it to a more modern understanding of human proportions. I like to think I am respecting and continuing a tradition, using materials unavailable to the ancients.

Prices below are for UK Sterling. For any other currencies please feel free to use the currency converter xe.com link provided on the 'How To Buy' page. Postage within the UK is 20% of the cost of the sculpture.

The shape of these Goddesses also appears as figures painted on to pots of that time, often floating above painted boats. A life-sized 90cm High version can be found on the 'Garden Sculpture' page.

These Goddesses were first carved in the Cycladic islands in the Aegean, but were exported all over the Mediterranean region as far as Turkey and upper Egypt. Like the Naqada Egyptian Goddesses above, their exact role is unknown, but they were found, sometimes many at a time, in graves all around the Mediterranean. They were originally highly painted and would have been very colourful.

Many hundreds of small figures like these were found at Tell Brak in Syria, made in around 3,000 BC. Most were very small and seem to have been votive offerings to the Goddess Inanna. Great emphasis was placed on the eyes and the mirroring shape of the eyebrow, and both were usually coloured in with bitumen or malachite.

All free-standing sculptures have my makers seal underneath and all wall plaques have my makers seal on the back. All sizes are approximate as these are hand-made sculptures, and will vary individually. All Luna wall plaques and Sheila-Na-Gigs are weather resistant and have been treated with a sealant to resist water penetration and so deter frost damage. They should not however be placed directly in water, particularly if there is any likely-hood of the water freezing, as this may damage them over time.
